Cinchy Tables: How Do They Work?

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to understand what a table is and distinguish between the different types of tables Cinchy offers. Tables are at the core of Cinchy and you would need to know the tables available - system, standard and spatial - and how they fit in the larger data hierarchy of the platform so that when you get to build them, you can do so effectively.

What Are The Available Data Types And Relationships?

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to understand the building blocks of a table and the different data types a table can hold. A table is there to organize one's data and information, but there are different types of data available and you need to know how to navigate those datatypes to ensure you can construct useful and effective tables.

The Role Of Data Security Classifications

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to distinguish between the different types of Data Security Classification available on the platform. In Cinchy, each column has a data security classification to ensure access to that particular column's data is appropriately assigned. This is a key concept, which needs to be understood by all users in order for them to design tables with data security in mind and protect personally identifiable information (PII).

Building A Standard Table From Scratch

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to show, in a step-by-step fashion how to build a new table in Cinchy. You will go through assigning a table name, and domain, and configure the details of a column, as those are the mandatory components required to create any table in Cinchy. In addition, you will explore the importance of the "# Cinchy Id" as a unique identifier for all tables build within a Cinchy instance.

Create A Table Through A CSV Import

Create A Table Through A CSV Import

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to upload data into a table by using a CSV file. Often, users would have a CSV file, where they have already created their columns and populated them with that. Instead of re-creating that same table in Cinchy, a CSV upload could complete the process in a matter of a single click.

Create A Text Column With Distinct Values

Create A Text Column With Distinct Values

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to add a text column to a table and ensure only unique values can be inputted. In large organizations, you often encounter lengthy tables with multiple stakeholders editing and often, the exact same values can be inputted into a row (eg. new client entry), which can create duplicates. The users need to know how to prevent that from happening by the "Unique" feature in Cinchy when creating a new column.

Configure A Number Column With Enabled Mandatory Input

Configure A Number Column With Enabled Mandatory Input

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create a date column and make use of the mandatory column feature. In situations where the user must ensure that a table row cannot be created without filling in a specific column (eg. phone number, name, e-mail), Cinchy's mandatory feature can make a column required. This is a common situation in CRM software or platforms alike, where a piece of data is incredibly valuable and if not present, the rest of the data is not usable (eg. a contact form without e-mail or phone number).

Create A Date Column With Custom Format

Create A Date Column With Custom Format

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create a Date column in Cinchy. The "Date" data type is one that will most commonly cause issues with display due to the fact that different data sources use different Date formats. Moreover, traditional relational databases require complex scripts to convert between date formats, which can add a lot of manual work. Cinchy has a different methodology for making the process seamless and the users need to know how to use it to their advantage.

Create A Multi-Select Choice Column

Create A Multi-Select Choice Column

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create a multi-select column with the choice data type. It is very likely any table users would encounter a situation, where they have to categorize data into a fixed number of choices (eg. product tiers, levels, etc.) and know how to set up a column like that in Cinchy is a must. In addition, the users need to also be prepared for a scenario, where multiple choices can be selected and be able to proactively envision their data structure.

Setup A Boolean Data Type Column

Setup A Boolean Data Type Column

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create a Boolean column. Even though a simple concept, the Boolean data type in Cinchy automatically creates a tick box that allows the user to switch between "0 - No" and "1 - Yes" in a more seamless way.

Create A Calculated Column
play

Create A Calculated Column

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create a calculated column by writing a simple CQL query. Being able to add more sophisticated logic to a column can significantly supercharge the data story a user is trying to tell. Furthermore, Cinchy's CQL Language, which is unique to dataware allows the users to go beyond the basic operators and write advanced queries. This lesson would use the following query: CONCAT([First Name], '', [Last Name])

Link Columns And Explore Data Relationships

Link Columns And Explore Data Relationships

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create linked columns between different tables in accordance with 1:1 and 1:Many data relationships. The traditional users of relational databases are used to the concepts of data blending and JOINs when it comes to linking tables, including the limitations and advantages of these operations. However, Cinchy has a unique and entirely different approach to combining tables (eg. the file upload option is a link to a system table), and that needs to be clear to ensure the users make the most out of the Cinchy platform.

Explore The Mechanics Behind Change Approvals

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to understand how to enable and use "Change Approvals" in a corporate context. When managing a large number of tables with critical data pieces within, being able to control how data is modified both externally and internally is critical. Cinchy comes with incredible data management and permissions engine, and by learning how to use it, your users can ensure tables are kept organized and error-free.

Track Changes With The Collaboration Log

Track Changes With The Collaboration Log

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to use the collaboration log to track user changes for a particular table. When an error or problem is discovered in an organization, the first question that often comes up is "Who's project was this?" or "Who was working on that". The need for accountability is incredibly important regardless of industry or company size, and a tool like Cinchy's collaboration log would allow the users to see detailed and well-annotated historical changes for a particular table.

Create And Customize Table Views

Create And Customize Table Views

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to understand the concept of a view and be able to create a view(s) for a particular table. The concept of a view is not a new one in the data management space, but Cinchy has a fresh take on it and its own way of making sharing data effective. In an organization with multiple departments and stakeholders, the ability to filter and display only the relevant (to that group of people) parts of a table can make communication much easier.

Published: Jan 31, 2023

After completing this lesson, you will be able to set up different data controls for a Cinchy table. You might be able to create a table, but if you cannot share it with the relevant audience, then you won't be able to communicate the message you have in mind. As such, the lesson would show the users each access level and how to enable them for groups and individuals.
